Start of the LNG terminal construction at Mejillones
Mejillones - Chile, March 24th, 2008. The ceremonial laying of the foundation stone of the Terminal in the presence of Michelle Bachelet, President of the Republic, Mr Marcelo Tokman, Minister for Energy, the local authorities, representatives of SUEZ Energy and Suez Andino-CODELCO, marked the start of construction work for the LNG vaporization terminal of Mejillones. Participating to this important event, Mr Georges Cornet in addition to highlighting the interest of Suez-Tractebel Engineering S.A for this Mejillones LNG project to proceed smoothly, stressed also the contribution that Tractebel Engineering can make to the development of several energy projects in Chile.
With an overall investment amounting to USD 500 million, the initial phase of the Terminal comprises a Floating Storage Unit (FSU). From the start of 2010, MLNG Terminal will supply sufficient quantities of gas to generate the equivalent of 450 MW, intended mainly to service the needs of the mining operations situated in the "Chile Norte Grande" region.
LNG Mejillones awarded to Tractebel Engineering the FEED mission, performed in Brussels, followed by an Owner's Engineer mission that since the beginning of 2008 required the permanent expatriation of five engineers to Chile. The second phase, which includes the construction of a storage tank, is in its development phase.
