ANALYSIS OF THE BLACKOUT AT THE DUBAL PLANT IN DUBAI
On 22 November 2008 the aluminium plant operated by Dubai Aluminium Company Limited (DUBAL) was suddenly hit by a power outage.
Tractebel Engineering had already acquired a solid reputation with the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) by analysing the causes of the blackout that hit Dubai city in 2005, and is also in the process of carrying out various studies into the quality and performance of the local electricity grid.
With the support of the recently set up Dubai Branch and in close collaboration with the customer, the requirements of the plant were analysed and a modification to the method used was proposed, based on studies recently carried out on-site. DUBAL, the seventh largest aluminium producer in the world, operates its own generating station (2400 MW) and desalination plant.
